Southwest Adds Flights to Grand Cayman

Airplane pic

With news last week that Southwest Airlines will begin flights into Grand Cayman, it seemed like a good time to post about all the different ways you can get to Cayman. There are numerous airlines that fly into Owen Roberts Airport in Georgetown, Grand Cayman. The Airport is centrally located on the tiny island and less than 20 minutes away from most condos. Taxi cabs are readily available as you exit baggage claim/customs.

The airlines with flights from the U.S. to Cayman include Delta, American, JetBlue, United, Air Canada, Cayman Airways and now Southwest. Flight prices to the Cayman Islands are always in flux and obviously different dates/airlines/connections/etc play a role.

The cities that fly direct to Cayman are broken down below by airline:

Cayman Airways: New York (JFK), Miami, Tampa and a winter flight from Chicago (only runs on Wednesdays and Sundays)

American: Charlotte, Miami, Philadelphia,

JetBlue: New York (JFK)

United: Houston, Washington D.C., Newark

Air Canada: Houston

Delta: Atlanta

Southwest:(Effective in June): Fort Lauderdale

As you can see, there are a lot of ways to get to Grand Cayman! Once you arrive, you'll soon be able to enjoy the beautifully renovated space as Owen Roberts Airport in Grand Cayman just began phase II of a CI $55 Million project that should be completed in early 2018.

Caribbean Beach BBQ at Kaibo

Looking for something a unique Cayman Islands dining experience? Every Tuesday night from 6:00-9:00, Kaibo has a Caribbean BBQ party. For just $25, it is an all you can eat buffet, featuring island style BBQ chicken, Cayman style fish, spicy jerk pork, Cayman oxtail, Caribbean potato salad, rice & beans, corn on the cob, house salads, Caribbean pasta salad, fresh baked cookies and Cayman Tortuga rum cake. There are also 2 for 1 Rum Punch and beer bucket specials. Maybe even better than the food is the live local band. They play a mix of Reggae and Caymanian local music and it is quite impressive with people dancing (lots of families with kids) and even a limbo stick down by the water. Since it starts at 6:00pm, I recommend getting there early to get the freshest of the food. Enjoy a BBQ dinner, Caymanian style right on the ocean!

Cayman Islands Represented in Sochi Olympics

It's not quite four Jamaican sprinters in a bobsled like the popular movie, Cool Runnings. However, the Cayman Islands have an olympian in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. What event could a Caymanian possibly compete in during the winter Olympics? As Sanka famously said during the 1993 movie, "you mean winter, as in igloos and eskimos and penguins and ICE?" Despite the logistical challenges facing a Caymanian to train for the winter Olympics, Dow Travers will be competing in this week's Alpine Skiing events.

The 26 year old was born in Grand Cayman. He has been donned the nickname, The Ginger Ninja. The 2014 Sochi Olympics are his second Winter Olympics after he became the first ever Caymanian to participate in the winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010.

After an exchange program in France at the age of 14, Travers took up skiing. He was told by coaches that he had a chance to be an Olympian some day. He spends his time training split between Grand Cayman and Aspen, Colorado. When he's not skiing, he plays rugby on the island.

Travers

Despite the cold weather in Russia, Travers led the Cayman Islands delegation wearing flip-flops and shorts at the Opening Ceremony on Friday night.  When you are watching the Olympics this week, take notice during the Alpine skiing events and look for one of Cayman's own, Dow Travers.

Baby….It's Cold Outside!!

Every winter, there is a stretch of cold weather that makes people long for a tropical vacation. This year, the cold weather is colder than ever and the trip might be needed more than ever. Take a look at some of these wind chills (what the temperature feels like when factoring in the wind) expected tomorrow morning.

Green Bay, WI:  -51 degrees F

New York, NY: 13 degrees F

Minneapolis, MN: -55 degrees F

Anchoraage, AK: 30 degrees F

Austin, TX: 24 degrees F

London, England: 46 degrees F

Calgary, Canada: -14 degrees F

If that doesn't send a chill down your spine, I don't know what will. While those parts of the world will be bundled up inside their house, the weather tomorrow in Grand Cayman calls for 84 degrees and sunny. For those coming from Minneapolis, that's 139 degrees warmer!! Book your flight now.

Kittiwake Shipwreck Attraction

Are you looking for a spot to snorkel? Do you like to suba dive? The Kittiwake Shipwreck attraction is just for you. This manmade reef is brand new to the island. THe ex-USS Kittiwake was a Submarine Rescue vessel (ASR-13) and part of the 6th Submarine squadron home ported in Norfork, VA. After serving for 54 years, the US Navy laid it up. An invitation was issued to both US and international applicants to apply for the donation of the ship for the purposes of artificial reefing. After the Cayman Islands were awarded the ship and began cleaning the ship and making it safe for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. The Kittiwake is the cleanest wreck ever to be sunk as an artificial reef.

This 251 foot long ship, weighing 1800 tons, was sunk at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach in West Bay in just 60 seconds. The Kittiwake rests 64 feet deep at the bottom, but only 15 from the surface, making it ideal for both divers and snorkelers.

You can snorkel overhead and see the main decks and topography of the ship, along with the beautiful fish and marine life that surrounds it. Since the Kittiwake Ship is a private park and attraction managed by the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, there is a small entry fee. It costs CI$8/day for to scuba dive or CI$4/day to snorkel. For more information on this once in a lifetime attraction, visit http://www.kittiwakecayman.com/.

Morgan's Harbour

Morgan's Harbour is located in West Bay and is just a short drive away from all our properties on Seven Mile Beach. As you make the 15 minute drive through the West Bay countryside, you will see parrots, roosters, and even an odd stray cow. Once you arrive at Morgan's Harbor, you will experience soft breezes flowing in from the Sound with great views of fishing boats docked at the harbor. This charming experience is worth a visit on your next trip to Grand Cayman.

There is a lot to do at Morgan's Harbor, including a bird sanctuary that allows you to hold some of Cayman's most exotic birds. This is also where Dolphin Cove is located, which allows you to swim with the dolphins (See #4).

This is also the location of one of Grand Cayman's most popular restaurants, Calypso Grill. This colorful restaurant is open to the sea breeze for the most peaceful experience on the island. Their fresh seafood is second to none and features specialty dishes such as: Sauteed Sea Bass, Crispy Mango Shrimp, Seafood Linguine, Smoked Salmon, and more, including duck, lamb, and beef.

So whether you are looking for a relaxing lunch or a fancy dinner, Calypso Grill at Morgan's Harbour has it all. I recommend checking out the bird sanctuary, swimming with the dolphins, and then grabbing lunch all in one stop to the popular Morgan's Harbour.

Change is Good: From Treasure Island to Sunset Cove

One of the most popular properties of Cayman Condos is about to undergo a very exciting change. Treasure Island Condominiums are excited to announce they will be changing their name to Sunset Cove. Once the beach restoration project was complete in the Fall of 2010, the name change made sense. With the beautiful cove finished, there is no better sunset setting on the entire island. The beach in front of the condos becomes a popular gathering place during Happy Hour because everyone wants to enjoy the breathtaking sunset. Because of this, the owners of the Treasure Island Condos decided that the name change would reflect the property in a more accurate away.

Cove3

In addition, there had been much confusion among guests due to the hotel being named Treasure Island as well. Despite sharing the same property for years, the Treasure Island Hotel and Treasure Island Condominiums are completely independent of each other with different owners and management teams. The timing seemed right to create an identity that our guests can relate to.

Cove4

So effective immediately, the condos formerly known as Treasure Island Condominiums will now be called Sunset Cove. For our long time guests, this may take some getting used to, but we are confident that with time, Sunset Cove will be one of the most recognizable names on the island. After all, what better spot to take in a gorgeous sunset than at Sunset Cove?

Experience the Deep Sea

The-atlantis-submarine

There are many great snorkel and dive spots in the Cayman Islands to experience the corals, colors, and fish of the Caribbean Sea. However, you can't get to 100 feet deep with a simple mask and snorkel. The Atlantis Submarine in Grand Cayman can get you to depths of the sea that you will never see with from the surface. The Atlantis XI is an advanced submarine that can allow passengers the opportunity to brilliant sea life from 100 feet deep.

This submarine was specially designed for underwater sightseeing excursions, led by knowledgable marine guides who provide information during the entire trip. The submarine is comfortable for passengers as it is air-conditioned and maintained at sea level pressure, so there is no effect on your ears.

The submarine was developed in Australia and features large, clear windows optimal for viewing the spectacular sights of the sea, with numerous photo opportunities. There is even a moment when a trained diver enters the water and begins feeding thousands of colorful fish right outside the windows.

You will be blown away by the amazing clarity of the water as well as the colors of the coral and fish. During the 90 minute trip passengers often experience sea turtles, corals, shark, eel, and stingrays. Oh and if you feel like you've seen all these things before, but are too scared to snorkel or dive after dark, the Atlantis offers night tours too, which gives you an entire different perspective of night life, when you see shrimp, lobsters, and other night time sea creatures come alive.

Next time you are in Grand Cayman, make sure to make a visit to the Atlantis Submarine for some breathtaking views that you will remember forever. To book your submarine tour for $79, you can visit this website:

https://www.caymanislandssubmarines.com/

Unfortunately, I don't have any under-water photos of the submarine to post here, but if you visit the website above or do a simple google image search, you will see plenty of great photographs to give you an idea of what this trip is all about.
